Pinkeye and Eye Abscesses are a common issue most farmers of alpacas, cattle, goats, horses and sheep struggle with. Causes of pinkeye can be due to bacteria or foreign objects entering the eye such as grass seeds, dust, etc. Pinkeye in cattle is usually caused by Bacterium Moraxella Bovis and in sheep by Chlamydia or Mycoplasma bacterias. Both bacteria borne and foreign object causes have the same symptoms and are treated the same way.
Symptoms
Early symptoms of pinkeye are copious amounts of watery discharge from the eye, an aversion to sunlight, eye irritation, redness and swelling of the eyelids and nictitating membrane (a somewhat translucent membrane which can cover the eye to protect from dust and keep the moist, also known as the third eyelid). The cornea will then go cloudy with possibility of ulcerations. Ulcerations may become an abscess and cause permanent blindness in affected eyes.
Other affects from pinkeye and eye abscesses are:
- Inability to graze properly
- Weight loss
- Losing mob, causing stress
- Damage from missteps and collisions
- Sheep are at high risk of death from the side effects of pinkeye
Long term affects
- Permanent blindness
- Eye cancers
- And other serious health issues
Conventional treatment
Antibiotic creams and powders are currently used to treat pinkeye and eye abscesses. New legislation requires you get these from vets rather than the rural supply stores. These antibiotics do seem to have the best results, however, needs to be administering multiple times a day. This is a major inconvenience that causes a mess, is time-consuming and labour intensive. There’s a new preventative vaccine that must be administered to the entire mob 3-6 weeks before “pinkeye season” with a 60-70% success rate. This results in a costly and time-consuming expenditure when needing to treat the entire mob.
A Natural approach
